PepsiCo has given the clearest indication yet that it may reintroduce its colourless variant of Pepsi cola, after an absence of more than 20 years.
The transparent Crystal Pepsi was available in the US, Canada, Australia and parts of Europe in the 1990s, before being discontinued in 1993. This week, the company said that fans of the caffeine-free drink would “be happy with what’s in store,” generating speculation that the company is set to reintroduce the beverage for a limited time.
A PepsiCo spokeswoman later reiterated the claim to advertising magazine Ad Age, saying that “Crystal Pepsi fans are going to be happy with what we have planned”.
Crystal Pepsi could return to market under the name Pepsi Clear, which was adopted by a limited-time release of clear cola produced by PepsiCo in Mexico in 2005. Three years later, the New York-based company filed for trademarks on the product names Pepsi Clear and Diet Pepsi Clear – but both applications were later abandoned.
The move would not be without precedence: in September 2014, we reported that Coca-Cola had reintroduced its Surge brand of citrus-flavoured soda – its first discontinued brand to return to the market.
