Twinings has expanded its range of Earl Grey teas with three new flavours in North America.
The line extension reflects the fact that the Earl Grey tea is Twinings’ most popular offering in the region. It will benefit from the addition of new Earl Grey extra bold, which features a more robust flavour than the brand’s usual Earl Grey tea, as well as new Earl Grey lavender and Earl Grey jasmine.
The expansion is also a fitting tribute to the heritage of Earl Grey tea, with Twinings boasting as strong an association with its creation as any other tea brand. Richard Twining first brewed his classic Earl Grey blend in 1831 at the request of then-Prime Minister Charles Grey, who wanted to replicate a tea he’d been served by a Chinese bureaucrat.
The blend was named after Grey, who in gratitude gave it his seal of approval, and the boxes sold today are still signed by the descendants of the man himself.
Stephen Twining, a tenth generation of the Twining family and a director of public relations for the brand, said: “As the originators of Earl Grey tea, I believe it is our mission to provide innovative and delicious takes on the classic blend.
“Lavender and jasmine complement the bold flavour of bergamot, which is the key note in Earl Grey. Extra bold is perfect for Earl Grey lovers who crave an intensified, more vibrant taste. We know these new blends will resonate with a new generation of tea drinkers.”
