Nestlé has pledged to improve the welfare standards of chickens used for food by its brands in Europe such as Herta, Buitoni, Wagner and Maggi.
By 2026, Nestlé says that all of its food products that use chicken as an ingredient will move to a higher standard of welfare, to meet standards established in the European Broiler Ask.
The company says that it will work with its supply chain partners to ensure the use of more humane practices in chicken production and to reduce the stocking density of chickens at production facilities.
Herta begin to make changes in its chicken sourcing operations from 1 January 2019, making these products available under its Herta ‘Preference’ mark in France.
Nestle says that it will engage suppliers and stakeholders in the near future to determine how it can improve welfare standards while also giving consumers access to “affordable, high-quality product choices.”
Nestlé Zone Europe, Middle East and North Africa CEO Marco Settembri said: “Consumers want to know where their food comes from and how it is made.
“As part of our commitment to source ingredients responsibly we will improve welfare standards for millions of chickens used in our food products in Europe, including our Herta, Buitoni, Wagner and Maggi ranges.”
