Ahold Delhaize has introduced the Nutri-Score nutritional information labels across the own-brand product range of its Delhaize supermarkets in Belgium.
The Nutri-Score system is a five-letter and five colour visual graphic which summarises the nutritional information of food and drink products, comparing ingredients such as fibre, protein, calories, saturated fatty acids, sugar and salt to determine a ‘grade’ for the product.
The system assigns a grade between A and E, – with A representing a healthy choice and E representing a less healthy option – which is meant to help consumers understand the nutritional content of products at a glance, making it easier for them to make balanced food choices in an efficient manner.
The Nutri-Score label will be introduced on all Delhaize own-brand fresh soups, cereals, yogurt and prepared meals, and Delhaize’s goal is to introduce the system to its entire range of own-brand products within the next two years.
The Nutri-Score system was created by French Public Health Agency and French public authorities, and the system was introduced as the country’s official nutrition labelling system in 2017.
A statement from Delhaize said: “The introduction of Nutri-Score aligns with Delhaize’s ongoing efforts to improve the nutritional quality of its own-brand lineup.
“Delhaize already reviews more than 1,500 own-brand items each year to lower sugar, fat and salt levels. Federal health minister Maggie De Block is also encouraging the introduction of the Nutri-Score system to Belgian supermarkets.”
