Global packaging industry leader, Klöckner Pentaplast (KP), has launched a ‘positive plastics pledge’ to minimise waste and increase its sustainable outlook.
The pledge includes measures to increase the usage of recyclable and sustainably-sourced plastics to 100%.
(KP) has included four stages to bring about the pledge in a measurable way. The first is ‘innovate’, as the company has committed to conserving the planet by reducing the weight of its packaging and using up to 100% recycled content where possible.
The second is ‘accelerate’, in that by 2028, KP will only use materials that are practically recyclable or sustainably sourced and will simplify its polymer and material mix to maintain an easy recycling process
The third step is ‘educate’, where the company has stated they will engage with consumers and communities about responsible disposal and the value of plastic waste as a resource.
Finally comes ‘activate’, in that KP has said it will aim to help close the loop on plastics, in leading discussions and initiatives that will transform collection and recycling infrastructure around the world.
Over the past year, the company has partnered up with organisations such as Wrap UK and the UK Plastics Pact to improve waste management by bringing together companies with charities and NGOs, which has moved towards a circular economy for plastics. Through this measure, signatories pledged to create targets to use packaging that is either recyclable, reusable, or compostable.
Daniel Dayan, the chief executive officer of KP, said: “We have big ideas about reducing littering, ensuring that used plastic is appreciated as a valuable new material and addressing climate change, whilst continuing to protect products and prevent food waste through our packaging.
“We have long recognised the challenges when it comes to the life cycle of plastics and believe a transformational shift is required in the way plastic is managed by our industry, by consumers and by society in general.”
