2016 is the year of geometric.
No, no, it’s all about compact packaging. Wait – it’s definitely about nostalgia and throwback in design work. No wait – we heard that ornate and barouche-influenced designs are going to be super influential. Oh forget it.
You can’t put every hot design trend on one product. Well you could. But frankly we wouldn’t recommend it and we certainly wouldn’t design it for you.
But when design trends emerge they tell us something about the industry. This isn’t about blindly keeping up with the Joneses. It’s about understanding what design elements are appealing to brands and consumers alike. It’s about respecting the tastes of your consumers and thinking of ways to incorporate this into your product for relevant, contemporary and modern designs.
Products have approximately three seconds to grab consumers’ attention on shelf. So it’s all about making design trends work for you, in a way that will make your product and brand stand out from the crowd.
Here at Slice Design, we’ve picked out three key product and design trends to keep in mind for 2016.
Geometric designs
Geometric designs have dominated Pinterest boards for a while now. Geometric tattoos continues to be one of the most popular categories on Pinterest, so it’s no surprise that designers have capitalised on this trend to engage the stylish and design-conscious consumer.
Think about moving beyond traditional aesthetics to intrigue the browsing eye of the consumer. This packaging is about a wide array of colours, strong lines and bold shapes reminiscent of the ’80s.
Artisanal
In 2015, product trends moved towards artisanal products. With a plethora of information at their hands, consumers have never been wiser to the markers of quality, care and craftsmanship in their products. Authenticity as a trend draws inspiration from the craft makers of small towns and the best kept local secrets that make their packaging a vessel to communicate the premium and handcrafted nature of the product.
Simple, clear, purposeful
Simplicity can often be underrated in design. 2016 will be the year that simplicity and purpose is embraced alongside more experimental packaging ideas. In markets that are saturated, designs based around simple icons, plain text and a direct message appeal to consumers who are buying into the idea of the product and its functionality. There’s honesty behind products that embrace this trend. It’s all about communicating directly to the consumer what they are buying and what it does. No marketing tricks. No fancy copy techniques. Just simple, clear and powerful design.
So how can I implement 2016 trends into my brand’s identity?
