Tyson Foods will invest a further $59.7 million in expanding its distribution centre in Pennsylvania and supporting its ambitions for growth.
Set to begin this summer, the expansion to the site in Pottsville includes construction of 164,000 square feet of addition space. The project is expected to be completed in late 2018, more than doubling the workforce of the site – adding 114 jobs and bringing total employment at the distribution centre to about 220.
Pottsville is a cold-storage distribution warehouse for Tyson’s Sara Lee brand of cakes and desserts. It currently serves retail and foodservice customers in the northeast of the US – including states from West Virginia to Maine.
The announcement comes just two weeks after Tyson Foods committed another $59 million to expanding its distribution centre in Macon, Georgia.
Tyson Foods senior vice-president of network planning and integration Gregg Uecker said: “This expansion will allow us to better service our customers and ship our complete portfolio of protein-packed brands from one distribution centre. New technology will also improve team member safety while reducing our carbon footprint.”
The company said the investment would ‘improve efficiency and support the company’s plans for growth’.
Pennsylvania governor Tom Wolf added: “I’m proud to announce that Tyson Foods will expand and create 114 family-sustaining jobs in Schuylkill County. The company is investing heavily in its future in Pennsylvania with its own $59.7 million capital investment. The I-81 corridor has become an extremely attractive location for food processors, and I applaud Tyson Foods for choosing to grow right here in Pennsylvania.”
