The Boston Beer Company has released an Angry Orchard pear cider as it aims to appeal to consumers looking for a refreshing alternative to beer and wine.
Blended with both pears and apples and with an ABV of 5%, the company claimed the beverage is a ‘fresh take on traditional hard cider’.
Boston Beer chose to make the new pear cider as a result of the historic popularity of perry in the UK and Europe.
The new variant is made using pears such as Bartlett, D’Anjou and Bosc, and apples Gala, Fuji, Golden Delicious and Granny Smith.
Boston Beer said that while fruit ciders are a small segment of the US beverage market, the trend is growing rapidly with drinkers craving more complex flavours infused with a variety of fruits.
Ryan Burk, head cider maker at Angry Orchard, said: “Our new pear hard cider is a style that reaches beyond just apples. We found great harmony and interplay between the pear and apple fruit varieties, ultimately delivering a crisp, fruit forward taste.”
Earlier this year, Angry Orchard introduced a limited-edition maple cider, following on from previous seasonal launches including elderflower. and summer honey.
The new pear variant is available in the US in six packs with a recommended retail price of between $7.99 and $9.99.
