More than 40% of people surveyed across the UK didn’t know that produce in season is fresher and more readily available, more than half didn’t realise eating in-season produce is better for the environment, while more than 60% were unaware that it supports the local economy.
Even those who claim they try to eat according to the season sometimes get it wrong: only 14% of people surveyed correctly answered that Welsh Lamb is in season in autumn.
“It’s a common misconception that Welsh Lamb is only in-season in the spring, when in fact it is also plentiful in autumn,” said Welsh Lamb farmer Myrddin Davies. “Spring lamb is reared on the coast with lush grass readily available so it can be sourced earlier than autumn lamb, which tends to be procured from hill breeds. Grass is not as abundant for lambs reared in the hills and so they take longer to mature. In Wales, we have more hills than coast, so autumn is a plentiful time of year for Welsh Lamb.”
