Statistics for April 2010 to March 2011 included 34 fatal injuries, down one on the five-year average.
Although the toll is a third lower than in 1981, farming still ranks higher than any other major industry. And given its relatively small workforce, it accounts for a tragically disproportionate number of deaths: one in five of the UK worker total.
In addition, there were eight deaths among members of the public on farms. Three of those who died were 16 or under.
Among other findings, both the number of major injuries and those requiring three days’ recuperation were lower than five-year averages. However, the NFU estimates that under half of such incidents are reported.
