Biotechnology firm Algatech has bought a majority stake in Supreme Health New Zealand, as the brand seeks to expand distribution of its astaxanthin and other algae-based products in the Asia-Pacific market.
As a result of the deal, Algatech will acquire Supreme Health’s unique Haematococcus Pluvialis microalgae, which has been cultivated by the company in Nelson Lakes, New Zealand.
The deal also gives Algatech access to Supreme Health’s distribution channels in China, New Zealand and Australia, and the company claims it will focus on marketing its product portfolio to industries such as the dietary supplement segment through the region, but with a special focus on China.
Algatech is already one of the market leaders in the natural astaxanthin market as it distributes products from its AstaPure brand to 35 countries.
The company claims the deal was influenced by the rising demand for algae-derived products in the region, and it claims the market for these products will “experience rapid growth” in the future.
Hagai Stadler, CEO of Algatech said: “This investment is in line with our core strategy to expand the potential of microalgae-derived products, especially natural astaxanthin which is our key ingredient.
“Collaborating with Supreme allows us to increase our service of Asia-Pacific, especially in China. We identified a rapidly growing interest in those regions for quality astaxanthin and other quality algae-delivered products.”
Supreme Health’s CEO Kerry Paul added: “Securing this partnership with Algatechnologies places us at the forefront of micro-algal production globally, and help us to build a global sales and distribution capabilities.
“Products derived from microalgae produced in a sustainable system are on-trend and supported by strong scientific research. The key bioactives in microalgae show increased efficacy in higher concentrations.”
Algatech chairman Ed Hofland will serve as Supreme’s president, and he added: “We believe that the synergy between companies, together with Mr Paul’s wide experience and proven track record, will help Supreme to become a major player in the global market.”
