The virtues of consuming alkaline in the diet were first published by Dr Robert Young in The PH Miracle, in which he states Strike the right balance by nourishing your body with certain foods to create an alkaline environment, and say goodbye to low energy, poor digestion, extra pounds, aches and pains, and disease.
His mantra is now becoming popular in the Britain, as more and more people are cottoning on to the alkaline fashion line in the constant and everlasting search for a body ‘in harmony’.
So how are we mere mortals going to achieve such balance, amidst the trials and tribulations of everyday life that our bodies are subjected to?
Clare Neil is the owner and director of Radiance Cleanse, a juice-detox delivery service. I spoke to Clare about the company’s most recent innovation, the alkaline Radiance Greens Cleanse.
“Doing a juice cleanse with Radiance enables you to hit the reset button, encouraging you into better food choices, and can help rebalance your body,” she says. “It makes the process easier as all the hard work of juicing has been done for you.”
So how did Clare and her team come up with the idea for a drink to ‘cleanse the body’? Clare explains: “My business partner and I have a huge personal interest and belief in the power of juice cleansing. We saw that it was becoming increasingly popular in the US and wanted to make a high-quality cleanse available to people across the UK.”
The ideal diet should have a natural ratio of four parts alkaline to one part acid. However, there is an argument that while this a good ratio for active people (exercise creates a lot of acid), less active people can handle a diet with a ratio of two parts alkaline to one part acid. Meat, dairy, sugar and processed foods all tend to produce acid when eaten.
“In formulating our individual juice recipes, there were a number of important factors. We wanted all of our ingredients to be organic, and ideally be as locally sourced as possible. We wanted them to have a good balance between vegetables and some fruit, so that they had a good mixture of nutrients but weren’t too sweet. Most importantly, we wanted the juices to taste good. Nobody’s going to stick to a cleanse if the juices taste horrible!”
The importance of maintaining an acid-alkaline balance may have been underestimated in the past. If maintaining the correct pH can encourage good health, increase energy levels and offer better digestion and clearer skin, as Clare believes, her company has certainly tapped into a very powerful market.
Verdict: Alkaline is so in. Vitamin D is so last year.
