The organisation representing European brewers has reiterated its support for a European approach to encouraging target action on reducing alcohol-related harm.
The Brewers of Europe reaffirmed its commitment following the adoption of a resolution on the European Union’s (EU) alcohol strategy by the European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety.
“The current EU strategy to support member states in reducing alcohol-related harm rightly focuses on alcohol misuse, addressing the problems caused by harmful drinking via targeted and local-level activities aimed at the minority who misuse alcohol,” the organisation said.
“Rather than introducing a new top-down approach, and given the diversity of consumption patterns in Europe, The Brewers of Europe supports the effective strengthening of the strategy’s existing mechanisms that was suggested by its external evaluation.”
The announcement was made less than a week after the organisation’s members introduced voluntary on-pack nutrition labelling to improve consumers’ knowledge of “the ingredients in beer and how these beers can fit within a balanced lifestyle”. Diageo had already introduced a similar labelling system, claiming that existing nutritional requirements for non-alcoholic beverages would not be transferrable to the alcoholic sector.
