The scheme now includes a new education programme in local schools and an extension to its poster competition. The campaign is partnered with Recoup, a national organisation promoting recycling, and aims to change people’s behaviour towards recycling and show that their efforts can make a real difference.
The ‘Recycling Cycle’ scheme is a pilot and if successful will be rolled out in other communities across the UK to promote recycling.
Currently, six Buxton schools are engaged with the scheme reaching over 2,500 pupils. New to the ‘Recycling Cycle’, the education programme uses practical activities to demonstrate the importance of recycling to pupils. It shows what happens to a plastic bottle after it has been put in the recycling bin and how recycled plastic bottles can be re-used many times and turned into a wide range of products.
The poster competition launches today and pupils are encouraged to draw on different creative skills to enter. The poster should encourage recycling and can be submitted along with a poem about recycling, a unique second use for a plastic bottle or a short film they have produced about the importance of recycling.
The winning design will be used in the Buxton community to promote recycling and educate the general public. The overall winner wins a £150 voucher, with the runners up in each school also winning vouchers.
Siân Chapman, corporate communications manager at Nestlé Waters, said: “We are delighted to be expanding this pilot project in Buxton and to be working so closely with our local community to support our shared desire to live and act sustainably. There is such enthusiasm for this in our schools and we excited to see how the pupils bring alive our recycling messages this year.”
