The Nationwide Caterers Association (NCASS) has called upon its members to make contributions towards communities affected by Ebola, as the memory of the Easter holiday fades from consumers’ minds.
Using the slogan “a hen is for life, not just for Easter”, the organisation is seeking to provide hen houses and stock them with laying hens and chicks as a sustainable source of income and food for communities in Africa. “Falling commodity prices and little access to food has left many starving, without means to earn or buy produce”, NCASS said.
The initiative follows the association’s previous work to support street children in some of Africa’s poorest countries. NCASS chairman Bob Fox has spent two or three weeks every year volunteering in places such as Sierra Leone, and claimed that the “send a hen” program offered caterers a way to give back for as little as £9 per hen and £2 per chick.
Fox said: “Thankfully, none of the street children we have supported in recent years have contracted Ebola, yet many remain affected by the problem. The ‘send a hen’ scheme will help UK food companies to provide food to starving communities and is a great way to give back! We’re hoping to raise £10,000 to be able to build and stock a lot more hen houses in local African communities.”
