Each company will work with the US DOE to develop a strategy to reduce petroleum and diesel use in their fleets by incorporating electric vehicles, alternative fuels and fuel-saving measures into their daily operations.
The partnership is part of the DOE’s broader ‘Clean Cities’ initiative. Coca-Cola Refreshments (CCR) currently operates more than 650 hybrid medium-duty trucks. These hybrid trucks reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by up to 30%, when compared to a conventional truck.
CCR has two electric trucks from Smith Electric in NY, and will soon deploy six Navistar eStar electric trucks in LA, San Francisco, Washington and New York City.
CCR is also training drivers to use environmentally friendly driving techniques through the ‘Smartdriver’ programme launched last year.
CCR was recognised for the new partnership and accomplishments during last week’s Clean Cities Summit, sponsored by the DOE at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
