Sales of potatoes rose by 31% last week as the temperatures plummeted and many customers stocked up to make seasonal favourites such as mashed potato and shepherds pie.
Soup sales increased by 25% and sales of pies and pastries went up by 24%.
Martyn Jones, Morrisons corporate services director, said: “The sudden change of temperature has led to customers changing to winter comfort foods to fight off the freezing temperatures. Eating habits haven’t changed that much between autumn and early winter, but the sudden cold weather seems to have given customers a taste for comfort food, and stews are now back in fashion.”
