In fact, between 2007 and 2012, they slashed the calorie count of their product range, according to very comprehensive independent research, by a massive 6.5 trillion calories.
That equates to 78 calories per day for every US citizen, out of an average 2,000 calorie daily diet. Since the 16 companies represent only a third of total packaged food and drink sales in the US, the overall industry calorie reduction may be substantially higher.
No doubt more can and should be done, but this analysis adds to the impression that such initiatives must ultimately have some impact on obesity levels.
