Members of VeriPrime, of Meade (US), represent 65% of the nation’s fed cattle.
They want retailers to collect a penny-per-serving to build a system of interventions to remove pathogens and real time monitoring of the effectiveness of the system.
VeriPrime is conducting a 45-day campaign asking meat packers and food retailers to unite in a national, coordinated end-to-end effort to improve the safety of beef products.
The goal is to implement interventions at the source, making the beef safety system better. The cooperative will begin by using two proven prevention technologies: beneficial probiotics and immunisation of cattle.
Scott Crain, CEO of VeriPrime, said: “Cattle producers know these interventions are effective against E. coli. The problem has always been the funding to implement the system. All we are asking of retail grocers and restaurants is that they simply collect a penny to reimburse the cost of the interventions.”
