The plan is subject to the consent of the farmer members’ committees of the cooperative parent companies and the responsible cartel authorities. Both companies are considered leaders in cheese manufacturing and process a combined total of more than 7.5 billion kilos of milk, DMK said.
Josef Schwaiger, management spokesman (CEO) of DMK, explained the planned move: “Against the background of consolidation in the European dairy industry, it is more important than ever before to combine forces across national borders in order to open up key non-European markets.”
JL Oosterveld, CEO of DOC Kaas, said: “DOC Kaas is a cheese specialist. We have adopted the ambitious aim of further strengthening our position. Our cooperative members can still count on a competitive milk price, continuity and growth in the future.”
The members of both organisations will be informed in the next few weeks. In accordance with the cooperative structures of both companies, the consent of the farmer members’ representatives to the merger of the operating units must be obtained. This decision is subject to the consent of the responsible cartel authorities.
