By signing on with SmartWay, DPS will contribute to the Partnership’s goal to reduce 33-66m metric tonnes of carbon dioxide and up to 200,000 tonnes of nitrogen oxide per year by 2012, by improving the environmental performance of its transportation operations.
Carbon dioxide is the most common greenhouse gas, and nitrogen oxide is an air pollutant that contributes to smog.
DPS’s SmartWay involvement covers the transportation of its finished beverages by third-party carriers, from its manufacturing and warehouse facilities to its distribution centres and customer warehouses, as well as shipments of beverage concentrates and various raw materials to bottling plants across North America.
Launched in February 2004, the SmartWay Transport Partnership brings together major freight shippers, trucking companies, railroads, logistics companies and trade/professional associations to pursue mutually beneficial strategies that result in emissions reductions and other environmental improvements, as well as cost savings to the companies.
