This research provides a better understanding of the demographic of drinkers in the UK and the harms associated with alcohol misuse.
Alcohol-related hospital admissions are at an all-time high and more than three quarters (77%) of those admitted are adults aged 45 and over. This highlights the need to reach older adults to change their behaviour and motivations to drink.
It’s important we change people’s lifelong attitudes and behaviour towards alcohol, and education plays a key role. While consumption of alcohol has declined overall, we know that more people are drinking at home, so we need to offer them tips and tools such as MyDrinkaware to help moderate their alcohol intake and stay within the daily unit guidelines.
Making sure people know the effects of regularly drinking above the daily unit guidelines is an important starting point. A ‘quick drink after work’ or a ‘nightcap’ could be putting them at increased risk of liver disease, some cancers and stroke if it exceeds a standard glass of wine a day for women or a pint and a half a day for men.
