Oat beta-glucan was awarded positive opinions from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the European Commission has authorised Article 14 health claims for cholesterol reduction and the associated reduced risk of developing heart disease, as well as for digestive health and blood glucose control.
Beta-glucan is a soluble fibre found in oats. This naturally derived ingredient is particularly well-known for its heart health benefits and helps to maintain healthy blood sugar and cholesterol levels, both key pillars of cardiovascular function.
Multiple clinical studies show that 3g of beta-glucan per day lowers cardiovascular disease risk by as much as 20%.
OatWell is the latest addition to DSM’s ‘Guard your heart’ health benefit platform, which also includes life’sDHA and MEG-3 omega-3s and Fruitflow.
“As the first grain-based product to be recognised by EFSA as having cholesterol reducing benefits, OatWell oat beta-glucan is a great addition to DSM’s portfolio of heart healthy nutritional ingredients,” said Ruedi Duss, global business manager for OatWell at DSM. “Backed by strong science, we look forward to helping manufacturers to offer consumers an effective nutritional approach to cardiovascular health, at a point when heart health awareness is at an all time high.”
