In total, the EFSA has received 4,185 main health claim entries, taking into account the conditions of use and references available for about 10,000 similar health claims.
Each entry comprises a food component, a health relationship and an example of wording. A list of the received health claims and progress of evaluation is available online.
The EFSA has screened all the claims received according to criteria adopted by the NDA Panel described in the document ‘Criteria for initial screening of Article 13 health claims’.
This process has identified a number of claims where further clarification or information is required before the EFSA can start its evaluation. If a claim is sent back to the Commission for clarification, the reason is indicated in the published list in relation to the screening criteria.
The EFSA’s ‘Register of Question’ provides an overview of its work, including the evaluation status for each health claim and the deadline for completing its assessment.
The deadline for the European Commission to draw up a position list of permitted function claims in the EU is January 2010.
