The Glasgow Distillery Company today announced the opening of Glasgow’s first Gin and Single Malt Whisky distillery in over 100 years.
Drawing on the pioneering spirit of Scotland’s first licensed distillers, The Glasgow Distillery Company takes its name from Glasgow’s original distillery. Founded at Dundashill in 1770, the distillery was known, for a time, as The Glasgow Distillery Company and remained active until the beginning of the 20th Century.
The first spirit to be produced is ‘Makar Glasgow Gin’, a superior Juniper-led spirit, which derives its name from the Scottish word for poet or bard, and which is packaged in a striking bottle that celebrates Glasgow’s engineering heritage.
The arrival of two modern whisky stills further enhances the plant. The production of a single malt, aged using a variety of different woods and cask sizes, is scheduled to begin next month.
Established in 2012, the company is a partnership between drinks industry specialists Liam Hughes and corporate financier Ian McDougall and an Asian based investor. Scottish Enterprise also awarded a £120,000 Regional Selective Assistance (RSA) grant to The Glasgow Distillery Company.
Chief Executive, Liam Hughes said: “We have invested in the best distilling equipment, sourced the finest ingredients and, most important of all, we have assembled a team of innovative distillers and determined entrepreneurs, united by the Glaswegian ambition to achieve. David Robertson, one of Scotland’s leading distillers, who learned his craft with Macallan before helping to transform the fortunes of Dalmore, is channelling all of his expertise into helping our distillers to create exceptional spirits, that, we are confident will quickly gain recognition as a significant new addition to the Gin and Scotch Malt Whisky market.”
