Mettler-Toledo Safeline has designed a new “next generation” X-ray machine for application to a range of packaging formats, including cartons, doypacks, plastics, glass and aluminium cans.
The X37 series allows manufacturers to consistently guarantee the absence of contaminants in their products through the manipulation of the detector’s sensitivity options. The machine can work at a rate of 1,800 containers per minute and are simultaneously capable of conducting additional quality control checks such as assessing the fill levels, measuring head space, detecting missing components and checking for packaging defects.
Manufacturers can choose between two detector diode sizes that offer up to five times greater sensitivity than other systems, with a 20w generator that offers the same precision as conventional 100w devices but with vast improvements to power consumption and cooling requirements.
Daniela Verhaeg, marketing manager for X-ray inspection at Mettler-Toledo Safeline, said: “Traditionally, food processors have needed to implement high power X-ray systems to inspect cans or glass containers at high speeds, sometimes in excess of 1,000 products per minute. The X37 Series, with its new detector technology and class-leading inspection software, is able to offer equal or, in some cases, improved detection levels whilst typically only needing one fifth of the standard X-ray energy power consumption. Consequently, this allows food and pharmaceutical manufacturers to substantially reduce operational costs while also maintaining the utmost level of safety and quality for their products”.
