General Mills has announced it is relaunching its original Trix breakfast cereal containing artificial colours and flavours following consumer complaints that the new natural variant is not as colourful.
In a bid to appeal to health-conscious consumers, General Mills changed the recipe in January 2016 to include natural colourants like radishes and purple carrots.
There has since been a backlash from customers and the company has announced it will return the classic Trix to supermarket shelves, while continuing to sell the newer variant.
A spokesperson from General Mills said: “We will continue to offer our current formulation of Trix with no artificial flavors and no colours from artificial sources – which has its own fan base – along with classic Trix, so both products will be available for consumers.
“Consumers have differing food preferences, and we heard from many Trix fans that they missed the bright vibrant colours and the nostalgic taste of the classic Trix cereal. Another request from our retro Trix fan base is to bring back the old fruit shapes – something we hope to be able to add in the future.
“We are always listening to our consumers and we continually innovate and renovate our products to ensure we’re meeting consumer preferences. Not everyone likes the same thing – and that’s perfectly ok. Our job is to make cereal people love and we are happy we can bring back classic Trix for its fans.”
General Mills, which also makes brands such as Lucky Charms and Cocoa Puffs, said 90% of its cereals have no artificial colours or flavours from artificial sources.
The relaunched Trix cereal is due to go on sale in the US in October.
