The Garden is the result of a community competition run by Gosport-based disposable packaging manufacturer Huhtamaki UK, and features compost made from the company’s eco-friendly BioWare cups.
“We have been producing our range of BioWare cups in the UK for some time now,” said John Young, UK foodservice sales & marketing director, Huhtamaki UK. “These cups are really quite special in that, not only are they compostable but they are also made from 100% PEFC certified bio-coated paper, which means they are produced in accordance with sustainable forestry practices.
“We at Huhtamaki UK wanted to prove that we could close the loop by demonstrating that the BioWare cups that we manufacture here in the UK could be successfully composted and that the compost could then be put to good use. It seemed logical to use the compost in our local community.”
Last year, Huhtamaki UK began the three-month composting process with The Woodhorn Group and started the search for a good local cause to help. To do this, they launched a competition to find a Gosport community group that would benefit from a garden makeover using the compost from the BioWare paper cups.
Of the entries received, Brockhurst Pre-school was chosen to receive a bright, new place to enjoy the outdoors, to play in and to have the chance to grow their own plants and vegetables to learn about food.
Huhtamaki wanted to support an up-and-coming garden designer, so invited proposals from the horticulture students at Sparsholt College Hampshire.
Dan Pearce’s engaging proposal combining a jungle area and learning zones was chosen and further support was provided by Gosport Borough Council and Sodexo Horticultural Services in creating the garden.
