BrauBeviale plays host to all manner of innovations – and at this year’s show, Taptube from Bavarian company MISA was no exception. This helictical glass beer tower allows customers to watch their brew being poured in front of them, providing for a spectacle in on-trade locations and tapping into the trends of naturalness and transparency – literally!
MISA’s Alexandra Mayer and Michael Mayer, the children of the company’s original founder, explained to FoodBev’s Alex Clere why TapTube is so exciting and how it would fit within the food and beverage industry.
Michael Mayer explained: “All the brewers take so much care in their beer, and usually in a keg it arrives in perfect quality – and in dispensing, it sometimes loses quality. But the [TapTube], it even keeps more quality in the product and [the brewers] have the end result they want in the glass.”
Each tap can hold 110kg of weight, so if things get heated in the bar environment the glass tower can withstand heavy force.
Unlike conventional beer taps, which are often made of stainless steel, TapTube is made by hand out of glass, meaning it meets exceptional hygiene standards. Each one takes around three months to produce – so although MISA can facilitate larger orders, it is not intended for a mainstream market.
Instead, with the rise of craft beer, MISA is targeting breweries, independent operators and taprooms.
Alexandra Mayer said: “For the breweries, it’s an image thing so they can present their product in a really nice way. For sure this is not a mass product; you can use it for very special locations so the customers who are interested, they really pick it for their special restaurants, bars and showrooms.”
