JBS has filed a report on its official website accusing Greenpeace of breaking an accord that JBS and other Brazilian meat packers signed in 2009 promising not to purchase cattle raised on deforested pastures.
A Greenpeace investigation reveals that many of Tesco’s tinned beef products, including corned beef, tinned mince and steak chunks, have originated from areas of Brazil where there is ‘systematic destruction of protected forests, and indigenous lands have been invaded’.
The Tesco products have been supplied by JBS.
JBS plans to take Greenpeace to court for material damages and for making accusations harmful to its image.
Greenpeace forests campaigner Sarah Shoraka said: “Beef farming is the biggest cause of Amazon destruction. Tesco is driving this problem through its beef sourcing. Tesco’s supplier JBS refuses to tackle the problem. Tesco needs to take the bull by the horns and stop selling beef that destroys the Amazon.”
