Many companies would like their ingredients to be part of a huge global database such as UL Prospector, but getting onto their lists isn’t as easy as you might think.
According to global marketing director Whitney Black, they turn down around 49% of applicants, as supplier ingredient confidentiality is key. No one wants to give away their trade secrets. In true time saving manner you can have multiple samples from just one entry sheet. Latest areas of interest include stevia, fungi, krill oils and green tea extracts.
Lindsey Ormond of Arla Food Ingredients talked to me about sarcopenia – the muscle wastage that occurs as we age and how this can be treated with high protein formulations. The recommended daily intake is 0.8g but almost 40% of people over 70 do not achieve this.
Peter Schouw Andersen, business development director for performance, health and nutrition, said: “This year Europe will have twice as many consumers aged 55-74 than young people aged 15-24 – a trend mirrored across the world. Our FoodBev presentation on weight management was full to overflowing in the Finished Products Theatre, indicating increasing interest in this sector with its focus on low calorie, botanical waters and the new birch waters.
Christiane Lippert of LycORed talked about the company’s tomato-based Sante range which does not rely on MSG for full mouthfeel and replaces salt by up to 30%. The company also offers LycoFibres from tomato pulp and natural colours for berry layers that do not migrate in layered dairy desserts.

They are working with Orthomol GmBH of Germany on this product. The skin protection from the sun particularly interests me as one new trend at the show is sun protection from within. There are two or three variants on show here. I am speaking on beauty drinks tomorrow so this is probably worth adding in.
Finally, Jess managed to have her carotenoid levels tested and came out at a highly respectable 6.5 – we asked DSM director Ulrich Killeit how this could be improved; broccoli, kale and spinach, he countered. So we know what is on the supper menu then.
