The Kraft Heinz Company has embarked on a voluntary recall of 36,000 cases of its American and White American cheese singles, amid fears that part of their film packaging presented an increased risk of choking to consumers.
In a statement released this week, the company acknowledged “the possibility that a thin strip of the individual packaging film may remain adhered to the slice after the wrapper has been removed,” potentially causing a choking hazard if it remains unnoticed.
The recall applies only to 3lb and 4lb sizes of Kraft’s American and White American pasteurised cheese singles with a best before date between 29 December 2015 and 4 January 2016. Affected products carry an on-pack manufacturing code of S54 or S55 after the best before date, Kraft Heinz said.
The Illinois-based giant has acted after receiving ten consumer complaints about the faulty film packaging, including three reports of consumers choking. The product was not distributed outside the US, Puerto Rico or Grand Cayman.
A spokesperson expressed regret for the recall in a company statement.
