Mat (l) and Jo were inspired to launch the range of lassis by their travels around India.
Lashbrook Lassis has launched a range of traditional yogurt, spice and fruit drinks, inspired by its founders’ travels through India.
Jo Howson and Matthew Hulett moved into Lashbrook Farm in Oxfordshire, where they began to recreate the flavours of the lassis they had encountered during a bicycle trip from England, through India, to Thailand. The drinks proved so popular with friends and family that the pair began selling them at local farmers’ markets, and Lashbrook Lassis emerged as a business.
The drinks are now available in three flavours – pear, spinach and ginger; coffee, pistachio and cardamom; and beetroot, fig and cinnamon – which are described as “healthy, sophisticated and delicious”. They combine creamy local yogurt with original blends of fruit, vegetables, nuts and spices for a “deliciously irresistible” beverage inspired by the traditional versions they enjoyed on their travels.
The company was awarded best drink product at Caffé Culture 2015, held at Olympia London this week, where co-founder Matthew Hulett spoke to FoodBev Media’s Sian Griffiths.
Hulett said: “During our tour we came across lassis so thick they had to be eaten with a spoon and others, such as the spicy sambaram made with sour buttermilk, which left us feeling particularly queasy.”
