A trial at the company’s flagship shop in Marble Arch, London, offered 50cl servings of chilled tap water for 20p. Shoppers could bring their own empty bottles and fill them, or buy a bottle from the machine for £3.00.
According to a report in The Daily Mail, it seems that customers turned up their noses at the tap water, perhaps preferring to stick with the company’s own-label mineral variety at 65p for a 50cl bottle.
“We did look at this and carried out a short, low-key trial,” said an M&S spokesman. “The trial was not particularly successful and we have now removed the machine from the store. We have no plans to install any further machines in any of our stores.”
