Giddings said. “I was pleased to be in Smithton recently with the federal member for regional development, Simon Crean, to announce funding from the Intergovernmental Agreement on Forestry. This included $4.25m for a new AgriTas training college and $1.5m to construct new power lines along Harcus River road that will allow for the creation of more dairy farms.
“Today we are marking another step forward in the growth of dairy in this region, with the opening of the new $4m Cape Barren dairy at Woolnorth.”
Giddings said the new operation was a prelude to the Van Diemen’s Land (VDL) Company’s future expansion plans in the region. “This project is yet another example of how the dairy industry in the Circular Head region is going from strength to strength.
“In August last year VDL announced a $180m investment to treble production at what is already Australia’s largest dairy farm. Over a four to five year period VDL intends to grow milk production from five to 15 million kg of milk solids per annum, particularly through converting beef pasture to dairy and harnessing irrigation from the Arthur River.
“This expansion will create 30 new dairy farms and upwards of 120 new full time jobs, so today’s opening is only the start of much bigger things to come.”
