The death sentence for the brother has been upheld, and so has the eight-year jail sentence (plus 500,000 yuan fine) for the sister.
In the appeal trial this morning, the court upheld the original verdict by Shijiazhuang Intermediate People’s Court that Geng Jinping and Geng Jinzhu were found guilty of producing and selling poisoned food.
Two other defendants, Zhang Yujun and Zhang Yangzhang, who were charged with endangering public security, were sentenced to death and life imprisonment respectively, also appealed in the same court on Thursday.
Meanwhile, a Chinese court has accepted a lawsuit by the parents of a sick child for the first time since the melamine scandal. According to reports, the court asked the case lawyer to pay filing fees, but it must still decide whether to hold a trial.
Until yesterday’s decision to agree to consider the lawsuit, Chinese courts have refused to accept filings related to the milk scandal.
