Mountain Dew is pinning its Superbowl hopes on a new television advert that features a puppy-headed, monkey-bodied baby.
The commercial, for the PepsiCo-owned brand’s Kickstart range, will debut during Superbowl 50 on Sunday, marking the first time for 15 years that Mountain Dew has broadcast an in-game advert.
It features #puppymonkeybaby, a hybrid character that combines a puppy, monkey and a baby – and highlights the results of fusing three awesome things. Mtn Dew Kickstart combines the Dew taste with juice and caffeine, the brand said.
“‘Puppymonkeybaby’ brings [the characters in the advert] just the right amount of kick to spark a damn good time, anytime, anywhere… just like Mtn Dew Kickstart,” it added.
Many users of social media have responded favourably to the creative, which has been called “hilarious”, “memorable” and “strangely appealing”. Other users have also joked that it had the potential to give them nightmares.
