The advisory board, comprising thought leaders and sustainability experts such as Harriet Lamb (Fairtrade International), Tensie Whelan (Rainforest Alliance), Auret Van Heerden (Fair Labor Association) and George Clooney (Nespresso brand ambassador), will provide recommendations to enhance the company’s long-term sustainability strategy.
The aim is to build on the success of the company’s AAA Program, developed 10 years ago in cooperation with the Rainforest Alliance to secure the highest quality coffee while improving sustainable farming practices and enhancing farmer welfare.
By the end of 2012, Nespresso was sourcing almost 70% of its coffee from more than 52,000 farmers who are part of the programme, and aims to increase this to 80% by the end of 2013.
At a board meeting in Lausanne, Nespresso announced several new initiatives to support the economic and environmental sustainability of coffee-farming communities in Africa and Latin America, from where it sources some of its ‘Grands Crus’.
