The company recently joined forces with the Carlsberg Group to advance sustainable packaging. The new Carlsberg Circular Community (CCC) is a platform where Carlsberg and O-I, together with other selected suppliers, will collaborate on developing future packaging solutions.?
O-I will provide its extensive sustainability expertise to assess current glass packaging and will work closely with Carlsberg and its CCC partners to launch Carlsberg’s first Cradle to Cradle certified glass packaging solution by 2016.
The company announced in mid-January that it has opened a new recycled glass facility in Poland. In Europe, some of the company’s 36 plants use up to 90% recycled glass. As a founding partner of this initiative, O-I sees collaboration initiatives and partnerships with its customers, suppliers and other stakeholders as fundamental to ensuring a sustainable future.
We also discussed the move to premiumisation in more developed markets with a consumer focus on beautiful design. The company has expressed general confidence for the glass market growing in size in Indonesian and South East Asia markets. The final piece of news, released last summer but still generally new to the market is the resealable bottle developed over four years and released at Drinktec – developed in conjunction with Portuguese cork manufacturer Amorim.
We have certainly seen a great many stunning bottles in glass over the past year and expect to see many appear as entries in this year’s Beverage Innovation Awards being presented at BrauBeviale in November. There are categories for design and sustainability, caps and closures and marketing campaigns. We are looking forward to celebrating excellence in glass across the board.
