The dress, modelled by 18-year-old Shanice Bailey-Farrell, who works in the supermarket’s Islington store in the UK, has been designed to encourage customers to reuse their plastic shoppers in the busy shopping period until Christmas.
Sainsbury’s will also be giving customers a free ‘Bag for Life’ in store on 6 November, and will be rewarding customers with double Nectar points every time they reuse a bag (two Nectar points for every bag reused).
Designer Adnan Bayyat said: “I created the dress by hand-crocheting Sainsbury’s bags together. The dress took me an entire month to make, but the result is stunning and vibrant. It’s also very positive to use my fashion design skills to make something which can promote reusing and recycling.”
Jack Cunningham, environmental affairs manager, Sainsbury’s, said: “We know that customers are concerned about the environment and the impact plastic bags have on the world, so we’re keen to make reusing bags as easy as possible.
“In the last year, we’ve rewarded customers with 462m Nectar points for bringing their bags back. We hope giving customers a free ‘Bag for Life’ and doubling the reward for reusing bags will give them even more of an incentive for making a difference when they shop.”
The specially designed dress will be on loan to the Gallery of Costume in Manchester from November as part of an installation highlighting the beauty of reusing everyday items.
