Sial places great emphasis on highlighting the latest innovations and trends within the food industry. Each year, XTC Innovation identifies the twelve biggest trends within the industry and this year as many as four out of 12 are focused around the subjects of health and nutrition – a clear indication of consumers’ desire to control their diets to better manage their well-being.
The influence of chefs
With celebrity chefs now an integral part of the media landscape, they are playing a large role in inspiring consumers to cook and share meals with friends and family at home.
Consumers are now not only seeking out new and different ingredients but are also able to monitor what they eat better, monitoring fat, sugar and salt content.
Simplicity
Consumers are increasingly looking to instantly understand the benefits of products. As a result, manufacturers are encouraged to rethink their offering – no more superfluous speeches, and verbose packaging where all the useful information is obscured. The consumer saves time by understanding the information immediately and is reassured as to what is in the product.
Respect for nature
Consumers are not only looking for organic foods; the scope of the trend now observed goes far beyond this. They are looking for foods that are safe, natural and environmentally friendly.
This trend reflects the emergence of new aspects of ‘naturalness’, a process respecting the original taste of food, seasonality, ingredients etc. At the same time, the trend guarantees that consumers have products that are as eco-friendly and natural as possible.
Total trust
Consumers want tangible, concrete and solid benchmarks, according to Sial. In addition to understanding the products, this means a relationship of trust: marketing discourse, information about ingredients, manufacturing process etc.
Consumers are quick to blacklist ingredients that have negative environmental impact. Palm oil, antibiotics, trans fatty acids, nitrates and other solvents are suffering the wrath of increasingly aware consumers. They now seek suppliers with whom it is possible to build secure and longstanding relationships.
