An awareness campaign aiming to educate consumers on the average alcohol content of a bottle or can of beer, glass of wine and measure of spirits will be launched in Spar stores at the end of January, with accompanying POS material sent to retailers.
And in a move that marks a first for the convenience sector, an advert will be played on Spar’s in-store radio station Spar Live to promote the ‘Do you know how many units are in your drink?’ message.
Spar retailers will also be expected to prohibit cross merchandising or linked display of alcohol with products that appeal to children, in response to new initiatives suggested as part of the government’s Responsibility Deal.
Spar retailers will be urged to commit to avoiding the cross promotion of alcohol with pharmaceutical products or branded ‘hangover’ remedies. Barry Wallis, Spar UK retail development controller, said: “The government advises that people should not regularly drink more than the daily unit guidelines of three to four units of alcohol for men and two to three units of alcohol for women.
“Therefore through the medium of our in-store radio and POS programme, we are urging our members to demonstrate that they are responsible Spar Retailers by supporting these initiatives to promote responsible drinking amongst their consumers,” he said.
