A UK-based snack company has created what it is describing as the country’s hottest popcorn, using one of the world’s spiciest chilli peppers.
The popcorn is made from the hot Naga Jolokia variety which registers more than 1,000,000 units on the Scoville scale, used to determine the potency of chilli peppers. It has secured its manufacturers, the County Durham-based Consett Popcorn Company, a contract with snack and hot sauce producer Psycho Juice.
Consett Popcorn Company founder Catherine Furze said: “Unlike some manufacturers, who use flavourings extensively to provide a flavour kick, we only use totally authentic, kitchen-cupboard ingredients in our recipes, and, when it comes to chillis, the choice is endless.
“The heat it contains almost beggars belief. The scent alone can knock you off your feet so we have to wear full face masks when we’re handling the chilli powder, along with gloves to ensure it doesn’t touch our skin.” Nick Moore, managing director of Psycho Juice, said: “We’re breaking quite new ground with hot chilli popcorn but the reason it works is because it’s not just about heat; it’s got a beautiful sweetness and a kick of lime as well.”
