The retailer, which has 33 food stores across Northern Ireland, was named the Best Fairtrade Supermarket at the Fairtrade Belfast Awards, during a ceremony held at City Hall. It has won the category every year since the annual awards began.
The awards recognise people, employers or businesses that have made outstanding contributions to promoting Fairtrade over the past 12 months.
Martin Walsh, operations manager for The Co-operative Food in Northern Ireland, accepted the award on behalf of the business. He said: “The Co-operative has a long-standing commitment to Fairtrade, and works hard to support producers in developing countries. To be recognised in this way, for the fifth year in succession, is very rewarding, and a tremendous endorsement of the work we’re doing.”
