The Responsible Sourcing Compliance forum was organised under the aegis of Aim-Progress, an umbrella association of 24 Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) companies that promote responsible sourcing practices and sustainable production systems.
The task force for Aim-Progress includes The Coca-Cola Company, as well as Diageo, Kraft Foods, Nestlé, PepsiCo and Unilever.
Bill Egbe, president of CCSA, said: “At The Coca-Cola Company, we believe that having a stable and ethical supplier base is important for our continued growth. Our consumers judge us by the content of our character just as they judge us by the content of our beverages. Respect for human rights is core to the way in which we approach our business, our workforce and our suppliers.”
TCCC and six other multinationals organised the first joint supplier training on responsible sourcing in Istanbul, Turkey, in November 2009. Since then, eight joint supplier seminars on responsible sourcing have been completed and four virtual training sessions have been held, reaching more than 1,000 suppliers and 2,000 participants.
The forum hosted in Johannesburg allowed new companies and suppliers to familiarise themselves with Aim-Progress and the expectations placed on them for responsible sourcing in South Africa. Local experts were invited to review and evaluate methods used to verify compliance to social and environmental standards.
