Global packaging company The Ardagh Group has achieved two company firsts with its new bottle for a brand of premium spiced rum.
The new design for Sailor Jerry, from William Grant and Sons, features a bottle neck embossed with a prominent anchor motif – the first time that this type of branding has been done by Ardagh in the UK spirits sector.
It forms part of a cork-mouthed bottle made using a glass manufacturing process called ‘narrow neck press and blow’, which the company says has led to a 20% reduction in overall bottle weight. It is the first time that Ardagh have manufactured a bottle of this style at their plant in Irvine, Scotland.
The group says that, while a cork-mouthed bottle is “relatively straightforward” to achieve, it remained untested and difficult under manufacturing conditions, presenting the company’s technicians with a challenge that they overcame.
Julie Doyle, Sailor Jerry’s global brand director, said: “Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum was developed to continue the legacy of Norman ‘Sailor Jerry’ Collins and was inspired by his era, when goods were made by hand and people had a stronger sense of pride in their work. The new packaging has been introduced to align [with] the brand’s look and old school feel with the premium, authentic nature of the spirit.”
