Three US distillers have partnered on the development of a new 91% ABV vodka, produced in small batches and finished in oak casks.
Starka is the first vodka from Oregon-based Big Bottom Distilling, with additional varieties from Bull Run Distilling and Indio Spirits and Distillery. The limited edition spirit will be sold across the northwestern state as a seasonal product, retailing for $29.95, the producers said.
As part of the collaboration, each distiller has created an exclusive variation of Starka by choosing specific barrels that are distinct to each producer, creating three different Starkas that “offer a fresh old twist to the world of vodka”.
Big Bottom Distilling claimed that the project – dubbed the Oregon Starka Project – was as much about collaboration as competition, and working towards a common goal of promoting Oregon’s spirits sector.
The company’s owner, Ted Pappas, said: “Oregon distillers don’t see each other as competition. There’s a real sense of support amongst each other and each other’s products. It’s about promoting ‘brand Oregon’.”
