Mary Mead, co-founder of Somerset-based dairy business Yeo Valley, has received the award for her services to sustainable dairy farming.
Commenting on the announcement, Mary said: “I was completely stunned when I heard the news, as it was totally unexpected. Along with my whole family, I am delighted to receive such as honour. After 50 years at Holt Farm and seeing the Yeo Valley business grow, sustainable British farming is something I remain passionate about.”
Mary and her late husband Roger Mead moved to Holt Farm on the edge of Blagdon Lake in October 1961. Starting with a tea room on the farm, making homemade clotted cream and freshly baked scones, the couple used the leftover skimmed milk to make the very first batches of Yeo Valley yogurt.
The OBE award recognises the Mead family’s commitment to supporting sustainable British farming and follows Yeo Valley’s third Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development, which was presented in December last year.
