The machine will reveal itself as a voice-activated device, created to test and reward ‘the patter quality’ of visitors while the city is hosting the Commonwealth Games.
The interactive machine will converse with the public, judging whether those who participate meet Glasgow’s high banter standards. If they are hesitant and serious (ie in local terms ‘their patter is watter’), they get a glass of water. However, those members of the public that engage with the cooler and manage to impress, demonstrating the self-deprecating, witty sense of humour that Glaswegians are known for, will receive a reward: a taste of Scotland’s favourite lager.
“Our water cooler was created to quite literally be a talking point for the city,” said Jane Cannon, spokeswoman for Tennent’s Lager. “We wanted to introduce international visitors to the real spirit of Glasgow: lots of chat, lots of humour and never too serious. The cooler is a great way for visitors to discover the concept of banter and for locals to brush up on their chat.”
The ‘water cooler’ will be at Glasgow Airport until 26 July, before moving to the Dram on Woodlands Road 27-28 July, the Clockwork bar on Old Cathcart Road 29-30 July and the Raven on Renfield Street 1-3 August.
