UK-based, Moroccan-inspired brand Cuzena – which means ‘kitchen’ in Moroccan – is aiming to challenge houmous’ strong position in the savoury spreads and dip market with a new range of dips made from fava beans.
Described as the ‘spicy cousins of houmous’, the three dips are made from fava beans, also known as broad beans, which have been a part of the staple diet in Middle Eastern countries for over 5,000 years.
Each vegan dip is high in protein and fibre, vitamins A and C, potassium and iron, and according to Cuzenza has less fat and salt, and approximately 75% less calories, than normal houmous. They are also gluten-free.
Made with British fava beans, each dip is cooked with onions, garlic, tomatoes and coriander, complemented with a combination of Moroccan spices and chilli. The three flavours are: Garlic & Coriander, Fiery Chilli and Caramelised Onion.
Cuzena was set-up by Shadia Al Hili, a Mancunian entrepreneur with Moroccan and Yemeni parentage She commented: “Our dips are examples of classic Arabian cooking – simple, flavoursome food that is not only delicious, but healthy. That ticks lots of boxes for today’s consumer, especially as they’re also perfect for a free-from or vegan diet. We estimate over 75% of Brits are dip buyers, so the opportunity for these challengers to houmous and salsa is significant. They’re also just the start of our mission to introduce the UK to ‘undiscovered’ flavours and foods from the Middle East.”
The product has an RRP of £2.95 for a 170g pot, and is currently available in Wholefoods, a variety of independents and regional branches of SPAR and through new distributor Cotswold Fayre.
